Fra Ur til Kanaan
Noah’s Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat in the present Eastern Turkey. 222 years and 8 generations later, Terah was born in Ur of the Chaldeans, in Mesopotamia, which is present day Iraq, 1100km south of Mount Ararat. After he became seventy, Terah had three sons, Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran probably being the eldest and Abram the youngest, there being sixty years between them. At that time, all of Terahs ancestors up to and including Noah were still alive. In fact Noah’s son Sem and Sem’s great grandson Eber (who gave their names to the Semites and the Hebrews) were only half way through their lives, both eventually outliving Terah.
Terah had a daughter, Sarai, by another wife,( Gen 20:12) who married Abram, but they had, as yet, no children. ( Gen 11:30)
Haran had two sons, Iscah and Lot, and a daughter, Milcah. Lot became the father of Moab and Benammi by his two daughters and Milcah married her father’s brother Nahor. Milcah and Nahor had a son, Bethuel, who became father to Rebekah and Laban.
In Acts 7:2,3 Stephen says “The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, and said to him, 'Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.'
Genesis 11:31 tells us that, Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there.
By this time Haran had died at an early age in the land of Ur of the Chaldeans, so when Abram told his father that he was leaving to go to some distant unknown land, rather than lose another son, Terah thought he might as well go with him. So off they went, the whole family. Nahor and Milcah apparently went with them as well, because Jacob later found Laban and his daughters at Haran. (Gen 29:4,5)
God had wanted Abram to leave his entire family because “Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the River in old times; and they served other gods.”( Josh 24:2-3) Abram could hardly refuse his father, the culture being what it was then, but obviously God’s plan was not being fulfilled. God wanted to separate Abram from the influence of his family and the worshipping of other gods.

They travelled northwards along the Euphrates reaching the foothills along the present Syrian-Turkish border. Here they settled, founding the city of Haran, named after Terahs deceased son, which still exists as a town today. Abraham stayed here long enough to call Haran 'my country' at a later date in Canaan. They dwelt here, in fact, until Terah died at the age of 205.
Acts 7:4 says that Abram left Haran only after his father had died, and Genesis 12:4 says that “Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran”. From this we can calculate that Terah was at least 130 years old when Abram, his son was born.
After Terah had died Abram was free to obey God, no longer bound by his father’s influence. He was reminded of God’s command. “The LORD had said to Abram: Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you.” (Gen 12:1) . In Haran they were still worshipping other gods (Josh 24:2) but “Then I took your father Abraham from the other side of the River” (Jos. 24:3). The other side of the River must be Haran, as Ur of the Chaldeans is on this side.
God took Abram, but Abram was credited with obedience anyway, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go”, (Heb 11:8).
Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. (Gen 12:5)
Abraham obeyed the call by faith, not knowing prcisely where the land of Canaan was. When God calls, He leads step by step. He rarely reveals the whole plan at once. It is more important to God that He and you maintain fellowship than it is for His plan to be accomplished in any specific way.
